Building Lists for Affiliate Marketing NO Longer Works!
Building an email list has been a crucial strategy for affiliate marketing for many years. In the past, you could create a funnel with a Squeeze page or capture page, offer some incentive for your visitor to sign up, the visitor enters their name and email address that goes to your autoresponder, create a list of potential customers, or leads, promote your offers to your list with automated prewritten emails until they unsubscribe, buy or die. However, there are several reasons why this strategy by itself might not be as effective today as it was in the past.
If you have a funnel like the one below and you are struggling to make sales, you need to keep reading!
Like Everything else, internet marketing will need to evolve from the above funnel structure to continue to be a viable way to make a full-time living online. Ask me how I know😊. I had that funnel for years, and it did work, but not anymore.
Here are four main reasons why the above method is ineffective today:
Surely, you must know that if you have a lead on your list, they are also on several other marketers' lists as well! Think about how many promotional emails your average lead gets on a daily basis. The more list a person is on, and the more emails they get, the less responsive to emails they become. This is called list fatigue! Sure, there is a lot you can do to stand out, but everyone else is doing something similar to stand out as well. This makes email open rates very low and can decrease your conversions. Added to that, as more people have entered the field of affiliate marketing, the competition has become fiercer. Your audience likely receives several dozens of promotional emails every day, and it's becoming more challenging to make your message stand out. Another thing to consider is that Google’s Gmail is the largest free email service provider, with over 60% of the market. If you have a Gmail email address, you know that Google buckets incoming emails into “Primary,” “Promotional,” and “Social.” Most people rarely ever check their Promotional tab, which is most likely to be where your first promotional email to your new subscriber will end up.
Spam and Privacy Concerns: With the rise in data breaches and privacy concerns, people have become more protective of their personal information. Laws like the EU's GDPR have also made it more difficult to collect and use personal data. People are less likely to subscribe to a new email list because they're worried about spam and privacy issues. Email service providers are even more strict and are likely to send your first email to your newly added subscriber to their junk or spam folder, never to be seen. Free email service providers now have sophisticated ad-blockers and spam filters. These automated filters can prevent your emails from reaching your subscribers. If your emails are consistently going to the spam folder, you're not going to see a good return on your marketing efforts.
With the rise of social media and other forms of communication, people are not as focused on their email inboxes as they used to be. More and more people prefer to engage on forums, social media sites, membership platforms, and text messages.
Does this mean building an email list is a waste of time? Not at all, I still do, but only as a means to another end and not the end all be all. Email marketing is a small part of my overall marketing campaign and progress. A well-managed list can still be a powerful tool for affiliate marketing. But it's important to adapt to changing circumstances.
You should personalize your content to better cater to your subscribers. Generic promotional emails are less likely to be opened. Always provide value beyond product promotion. This could be in the form of advice, tutorials, or valuable insights related to the product niche.
You should segment your list as not all subscribers are the same or respond to the same things. Segment your list based on interest, engagement, purchase history, and other factors to deliver more targeted and effective messages.
Consider other ways of reaching your audience, such as social media, blogging, podcasts, or even direct messaging on platforms like LinkedIn or Facebook.
Remember, the effectiveness of your affiliate marketing strategy depends not only on the size of your list but the quality of your relationships with your subscribers.
If you want to build loyal followers and raving fans, bypass the email filters and spam folders, increase your return on ad spend and increase profits, you need to take an entirely different approach. Instead of focusing on building a list, I focus on maintaining a HUB!
This is what all major brands and service industries do. They have a subscription-based membership site where fans continue to log in and interact with different products and services. This is what large successful companies like Apple, Amazon, Credit Karma, and NerdWallet do. And this is what I do.
